Pre-Season Takedown Tourney at Trigg Co.

Here is the breakdown from last weekend: Trigg County Takedown Tournament in Cadiz.

Schools: Ohio County, Trigg County, Caldwell County, Christian County, Hopkinsville, Paducah Tilghman (UHAmiddle school only). Multiple entries from each school allowed in each weight class.

We entered 13 in the high school division and 14 in the middle school division.

Format: Round Robin: Each match consisted of one 3 minute period.

Ohio County High School Results:

1st place: Chase Boone (119 lbs), Jake Moore (125 lbs.), Jacob Bennett (130 lbs.), Ryan Bunch (135 lbs.)

2nd Place: Monnie Brown (160 lbs.)

3rd Place: Trevor Wilson (135 lbs.)

4th Place:Travis Baggarly (103 lbs.), Landon Spurlock (152 lbs.), Dalton Brown (hwt.)

Ohio County middle school division:

1st place: BJ Miller (103 lbs.)

2nd Place: Myles Roach (103 lbs.), Jake Griffin (140 lbs.), Aaron Fulton (150 lbs.)

3rd Place: Klemmer Nicodemus (82 lbs.), Kenneth Newcom (103 lbs.), Caden Brown (110 lbs.), Jesse Brown (hwt.)

4th place: Kaleb Sapp (70 lbs.), John McCormack (96 lbs.)

We had a pretty good day. Take downs are not traditionally our strength, but with such a young team we were eager to seek out some competition and gain some experience. So we went into the tournament with an open mind.

Chase and Billy lived up to pre-season expectations and pretty much dominated their competition. Ryan and Jacob, however, really made the day. They're two of the younger guys in our line-up that we are looking at to play a vital role in our team success. They really stepped-up. Ryan's only a freshman, but you wouldn't have guessed it with the intensity he displayed Saturday, and we weren't sure what to expect with Jacob making the huge jump from 103 to 130 lbs. since last season. They turned a lot of heads. Those young men are for real.

We were pleased with the middle school crowd too. Coach Miller and I discussed it and decided to bump Baggarlyto the high school division to accustom him to the high level of competition he could see as a varsity wrestler, and he did a good job. It certainly helped that we had three more 103 pounders behind him. It was fantastic to have BJ, Myles, and Kenneth sweep the middle school division too. Aaron Fulton was technically sound for his age and experience level and earned his second medal in as many weeks.

Overall, the boys took the mat with a lot of intensity, and kept taking it to their opponents. It was clear we were better conditioned than most of our competition and it really paid off. We secured quite a few come from behind wins through dogged determination and perseverance. It's a great feeling to see these young men experience success directly related to the hard work they put into practice every day.

Next week: Saturday 11/27 at Bryan Station for the Defender Duals, and Thursday 12/2 we open at home with a Dual against Daviess Co.

OC Middle School Wrestlers Make 2010-2011 Debut at UHA

The Ohio County wrestling team sent 16 middle school wrestlers to University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville on Saturday to complete in the Third Annual Tim French Memorial Middle School Wrestling Tournament.

Ohio County was represented well in the ten team tournament.

Jesse Brown was the tournament champion in the heavy weight division.

Zach Farris, Chance Hoover and Travis Baggarly all took second place in their divisions.

Aaron Fulton and Jake Griffin both earned third place medals, and Kaleb Sapp took fourth place.

It was a great first showing by our young wrestlers. For the most part, they came out with a lot of fight and executed well relative to their level of experience. It's a great sign anytime first and second year wrestlers are able to penetrate deep in a tournament. Even many of the young men who had a tougher go of it still displayed a lot of grit. We are proud of them. They show a lot of promise.

We are going to take our whole squad to Trigg County on Saturday where the boys will be split into Varsity, JV, and Middle School Divisions to participate in a pre-season takedown tournament. It will be the first outing of the year for our high schools kids. We're all very excited to get the competitive season under way.

The Ohio County Wrestling Team will be heading to Bryan Station for their Defender Duals on Saturday November 27. The Team will depart from the Render Center at 4:15 AM. Weigh-ins are at 8:30 AM EST.
