-=WHS Girls Open Gym- Sundays, 3 to 5=- WHS Open Gym is open to current and former WHS students, as well as the community.
Twenty Willits boys & girls, ages 7 through 11 participated in the four full days of fundamental skill development, small sided 1/2 court games, and full court games. Coach Derek Heath started working sports camps when he was 18, and he has worked 10-15 camps every summer since. He is frequently employed as a camp director all summer now; either for a company, or as the director of his own camps. This year he was selected to work at the NBA's Golden State Warriors Camp, at Oracle Arena in Oakland. Derek runs a great Camp. He's borrowed from all the camps he's worked to create his camp experience, and judging by the smiles per minute, he's come up with a winning formula. The kids have a lot of fun while they develop their skills. By the end of each day they are all very tired, and they've also learned something about how strong they are. Last year the same camp drew 24 youngsters. We were a little dissapointed this years didn't do better.
Courage is being afraid to do something, but still doing it. ~Knute Rockne What kind of player are you? Do you play the game with fear, or with courage? If you say that you're not afraid of anything, then I question your courage. Why? Because showing courage means that you recognize the situation as dangerous, or risky, or difficult, but you still do it in spite of your fear. That's real courage- feeling the fear, and overcoming it;... continued here- http://willitscoach.wordpress.com/
I have a blog! Don't know what a blog is? A blog is basically an online journal. It's where the "blogger" can post whatever they want- an article, commentaries, stories, etc. My blog will be limited to basketball and general youth sports topics. Follow this link and check it out. I will post new stuff there regularly. http://willitscoach.wordpress.com/
BASKETBALL JONES HOOP CAMPS (ages 7-15, boys & girls) This Camp has been operating DAY CAMPS at Eagle Peak & Ft Bragg Middle Schools for about 10 years. I worked one of their camps in 2003 and was impressed with the high level of instruction, enthusiasm and fun. A number of current and former WHS student-athletes have gone to a Basketball Jones Hoop Camp. Each camper receives 40 hours of quality instruction, a camp t-shirt, a basketball, an Instructional DVD, and a water bottle. There are also Camp awards & medals, trophies, & daily prizes. This is a complete skills type camp that is suitable for the lower sklled as well as the advanced player. They teach all aspects of the game, focusing on the fundamentals: defense, dribbling, passing, and shooting. They work on individual as well as team skills. This is an excellent camp experience and I'd reccomend it to all local boys and girls who have at least one season of experience in the sport. http://www.basketballjonescamps.com/ NBC CAMPS (ages 9-18, boys & girls) This is an OVER NIGHT summer camp where participants live in seperate secure college dorms, and eat meals in the college cafeteria. NBC offers many different types of camps that are suitable for the moderately skilled to the elite advanced athlete. A number of current and former WHS student-athletes have gone to an NBC Camp. NBC has been running an excellent basketball camp experience since 1971 The closest NBC Camp locations are Simpson College in Redding, and Pacific Union College near Napa. I have worked as a coach at 3 NBC Camp sessions, and I would reccomend this Camp to all serious committed players who want to get better fast, and and aren't afraid of hard work. "NBC Camps is committed to honoring each campers athletic and life goals through providing an experience consisting of encouragement, intensity, progressive skill development, and a commitment to excellence." I would not reccomend this camp to the begining player. http://www.nbccamps.com/camps/basket_ball/basket_ball.htm RECRUITING 101 "Welcome to Recruiting-101.com where you can learn about the five steps to receiving an athletic scholarship offer, how to make a well done highlight video, and my updates to help athletes, parents, and coaches through the recruiting process." http://www.recruiting-101.com/ EASTBAY- Basketball Shoes Athletic shoes and apparel, many sale price and discounted selections to choose from. http://www.eastbay.com/home/default.cfm?TID=5555-43130311160143110256824-0&tree_id=57831 NORCAL BASKETBALL TEAM CAMP FOR GIRLS This is the Team Camp that Coach Meyer has taken teams to in the past. Willits H.S. is listed on this site. http://www.summerbasketballcamp.com/girls/norcal.htm 10-Part Summer Checklist for the Motivated Player http://ezinearticles.com/?10-Part-Summer-Checklist-for-the-Motivated-Player&id=573089 It's All About the Jump Technical aspects of athletic movement training. Not very interesting unless you are a serious athlete, or you train serious athletes. http://www.sbcoachescollege.com/articles/It's%20All%20About%20the%20Jump.html 20 Basic Training Tips for Basketball Players Technical aspects of basketball specific strength and conditioning training. This information is at the "cutting edge" of training methods. For the serious athlete who desires to excell at the next level of competition. http://www.sbcoachescollege.com/articles/20BasicTrainingTipsforBballPlayers.html Stretching and Basketball Performance If you start noticing, you will see more and more teams in every sport using a "dynamic warm up" in place of the old-fashioned pre-game stretch. Because old habits die hard, it's not difficult to find coaches at every level, from rec-league to the NBA who are still having their athletes use the old on-the-floor-stretch session prior to competition. This is true despite the fact that scientific, empirical data, shows that a conventional stretch before competetition actually hurts performance. Stretching is not a bad thing when used at the right time- afterwards, but it is counter productive used immediately prior to competition. This is why we do not stretch before practice or games. Here is some of the research results. http://www.athletesperformance.com/spj/article.php?id=268 More on stretching http://www.playyourgame.com/twist_flex.html From one of the most respected Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists in the world- http://functionalpathtraining.blogspot.com/2007/12/static-stretching.html And more... Most availible data on static or PNF streching prior to activity shows that it dramatically decreases your performance with respect to strength, power, and local muscular endurance. I will post a few examples below: Faigenbaum et al. 2005 60 children, mean age 11.3 years old Vertical jump and shuttle run performance declined significantly following stretching. Long jump performance was significantly reduced following the stretch. Nelson et al. 2005 22 college age subjects 24% decline in muscular endurance following stretching Decrease In Bench Press Power and Velocity (McClellan et al. 2000) Decrease in sprint performance (Fletcher and Jones, 2004) Acute stretching negatively impacts balance, reaction time, and movement time (Behm et al. 2004) Stretching inhibits jumping performance (Young and Behm, 2003) Behm et al. 2001 12% decrease in force output in stretch group 11.7% decrease in max iEMG activity in stretch group Control group: No change Young & Behm, 2002 Static Stretching vs. Active warm-up Results indicate that static stretching had a negative influence on explosive force and jumping performance variables Concentric Jump Height - Decreased Drop Jump Height - Decreased RFD - Decreased Peak Force - Decreased Contact Time - Increased Plus, it does little or nothing to prevent acute injuries: Van Mechelen, et al., 1993 Stretching before running was not associated with running injuries. Pope, et al., 2000 No evidence that pre-exercise stretching reduces injury risk. Lindstrom, et al., 1999 Suggested that pre-exercise stretching has no preventative effect on muscular soreness, tenderness following exercise. Askling, et al., 2002 Indicated that stretching could induce severe strain injuries. Herbert & Gabriel, 2002 Systematic review: Stretching before or after exercise does not offer protection from muscle soreness. Stretching before activity does not present a practical useful reduction in the risk of injury. Shrier, 1999 Review found stretching not shown to reduce injury The proper time to stretch, OTHER THAN DYNAMICALLY, is post workout or post activity... Kokkonen et al. MSSE 29:S63 (2001) parameters for strength and power improved by post exercise chronic stretching over a 10 week period Taken from here- http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21555&page=7 |
